GIRLS: How did Elizabeth’s lack of an heir lead indirectly to the Engl Civ War? Journal 3-2 Analyze how Galileo, Descartes, and Newton altered traditional interpretations of nature and challenged traditional sources of knowledge. (2009-7) Journal #3-3: Analyze the ways in which the ideas of seventeenth century thinkers like John Locke and Isaac newton contributed to the ideas of the eighteenth century enlightenment thinkers. (2010b-6) Journal #3-4: Analyze the extent to which Frederick the Great of Prussia and Joseph II of Austria advanced and did not advance Enlightenment ideals during their reigns. (2009-4)

Using one of the three examples of art we just looked at, discuss how artists of noble patrons tried to show behaviors of nobility. (refer to the pic; 2-3 sentences) On even of French Revolution (1789), French opulence was at a zenith (highest point). 7 Short Ans practice (Immanuel Kant) (journal #9 – start on a new page)
Kant refers to “courage” in the last line of the first paragraph. Discuss how Kant supports this line as a good motto for the Enlightenment. Provide one example (not found in this passage) for this type of courage, and discuss how his/their actions would support this motto. Provide one example (different than #2) in support of the top two lines on p While you can mention Frederick, avoid using him as your example.

8 Short Answer (put in journal as #10)
Choice #1 – Joseph II In the last line of the 2ND section , Joseph sounds surprised. What has surprised him, who might be doing it, and why? Name /describe one person who would have opposed Joseph’s views. Choose another Enlightened Absolutist and describe something they did that could be considered enlightened. Choice #2 – Frederick the Great Give an example in this passage which would support the concept he said of himself as the FIRST SERVANT OF THE STATE. In the 4th paragraph, Frederick discusses government. How would Montesquieu disagree, and why? Frederick mentions nobility at the start of the second paragraph. What is he suggesting, and why would he say those flattering words?
