1 UDL to Solve Problem Kelly Rowe March 12, 2014

2 Background I am currently teaching 23 students grouped heterogeneously in a first grade classroom. The class includes students at a variety of levels; some are reading on a late 2nd/early 3rd grade level while some are performing at a first grade level. In addition I have 2 ELL students and 1 student on a 504 plan with diagnosed ADHD. During our reading/language arts block, teachers are encouraged to put the students into small groups for instruction. Usually the students are grouped homogeneously for small group instruction on their reading level. Small groups are compromised of 5-6 students. At this time, I am usually the only adult in the room with the students. It is a challenge to ensure that everyone is working productively and independently while I am working with a small group. It is also my first year teaching first grade after teaching 4th grade for 11 years. In the past I have taught homogeneous reading groups, or have taught a heterogeneous group with the assistance of another teacher.
