For commentaries on books that were assigned a call number with a single Cutter, assign the same number to the commentary, add a 3 to the Cutter, and add 2nd Cutter for the main entry. This procedure is only used if the schedule hasn’t already provided for commentaries. Since the schedules are generally pretty expansive for pre-20th century authors, this technique is most likely to be used for 20th century works that have attracted a lot of attention. The number on this particular book was assigned by LC. Unclear why their shelflister went to 3 digits since there are no other books held by LC that use main entry H.

The 3 on the first Cutter may be a little confusing. LC happens to add a 3 to the base number W56 for Wittgenstein for individual works by that philosopher. You know from the English translation that the base number for the individual work, Tractatus, is T73. Since we can’t have more than 2 Cutters, the 2nd Cutter has to be expanded to account for the main entry. So a 3 is added to the base number, with additional digits for the main entry Cerezo, and then, using the expansion row from the LC Cutter table, 3 for C and 4 for E, the 1st two letters of Cerezo’s name. (Note that LC used 2 instead of 3 because they had run out of room in their shelf)

You want your book to file after 30 minute meals but before Comfort foods. The LC 050 had, incorrectly, .R387. Leave enough room for titles that would come before C.

Another situation where the 2nd Cutter is used to further subarrange, in this case by city within France.From the given shelf sequence it’s clear the base number for Paris is P37. This is not a book about a book, so you would not add 3 before the main entry extension digits. In this case, the main entries are different, so your concern is to get your main entry in sequence between Arnoux and Deschamps, so 26 is added to the base Cutter, leaving room for additional authors before and after Collin.
