2 Monroe Doctrine: President James Monroe’s statement forbidding further colonization in the Americas and declaring that any attempt by a foreign country to colonize would be an act of hostility

3 Nationalism: A sense of pride and devotion to a nation.

4 American System: Henry Clay’s plan for raising tariffs(taxes) to pay for internal improvements such as better roads and canals

5 Sectionalism: A devotion of interests of one geographic region over the interests of the country as a whole

6 Jacksonian Democracy:
An expansion of voting rights during the popular Andrew Jackson administration

7 nullification crisis:
A dispute led by John C. Calhoun that said states could ignore federal laws if they believed those laws violated the constitution

8 Spoils system: A politicians’ practice of giving government jobs to his or her supporters

9 Tariff of Abomination:
The nickname given to a tariff (tax) by southerners who opposed it Abomination: anything greatly disliked

10 Indian Removal Act: A congressional act that authorized the removal of Native Americans who lived east of the Mississippi River

11 Trail of Tears: An 800- mile forced march made by the Cherokee from their homeland in Georgia to Indian Territory; resulted in the deaths of almost 1/4th of the Cherokee people
