2. An Earthquake is a trembling of the ground that results from the sudden shifting of rock  beneath the earth's crust.
 EARTHQUAKES vibrate in the earth's crust. That causes shaking at the surface.
When the plates move, the land shakes and quakes. The movement is an earthquake.
In an earthquake, the initial point where the rocks rupture in the crust is called the focus, which is the point on the land's surface.

It is caused by a shift of Earth's surface or crust.
The Earth is made of huge plates of rock. These plates are always moving. Most of the time they move slow.
Sometimes the edges of two plates move or rub against each other.
Earthquakes happen near cracks called faults.
