2 Remember Erikson? Identity vs. Role Confusion (age 12-21)
The struggle to discover and find one’s own identity “fitting in” developing a sense of morality and right from wrong. Development of a strong affiliation and devotion to ideals, causes, and friends.

3 Erikson, continued Intimacy vs. Isolation (age 21-40)
seeking companionship and love (friends and life- partners). beginning to “settle down" and start families. seeking deep intimacy and satisfying relationships. If unsuccessful, isolation may occur.

4 James Marsha Crisis and Commitment
Crisis = reconsideration of values learned as a child Commitment = (re)newed values and roles 4 Statuses – NOT stages, NOT sequential

5 Identity Diffusion the status in which the adolescent does not have a sense of having choices; he or she has not yet made (nor is attempting/willing to make) a commitment

6 Identity Foreclosure  willingness to commit to some relevant roles, values, or goals for the future. no identity crisis has been experienced conformity to the expectations of others regarding their future (e. g. allowing a parent to determine a career direction)

7 Identity Moratorium currently in crisis.
exploring various commitments and ready to make choices. no commitment to these choices yet.

8 Identity Achievement identity crisis has occurred
commitment has been made to a sense of identity (i.e. certain role or value) that has been chosen
