2 Resume Writing Lesson: 11th Grade
Objective: All students will understand the uses of a resume, and create a resume for your future use. This PowerPoint presentation contains the following: Resume Lesson Instructions on how to start your own resume.

3 What is a resume? It’s a well organized report of your accomplishments
It’s like a movie trailer… if it catches your interest, you want to see the movie. The same holds true for your audience – if your resume piques their interest, they will want to learn more about you!

5 What does your resume say about you?
Name, address, phone Objective Education Work Experience Skills Extracurricular Activities Clubs Sports Volunteer Activities Honors and Awards References YOUR ATTENTION TO DETAIL

6 Objective Statement An Objective Statement is a short statement that describes what you want. While your overarching goal, for example, may be to get a job, your resume statement may state that you want a job in customer service. Example Objective Statement: To obtain a full-time job working in customer service.

7 Entering Information Enter only information that happened while in high school: 9th – 11th Enter information starting with activities you’ve done most recently ending with things you have done in 9th grade. Make sure you include any leadership positions you’ve held or activities you helped organize. Use parallel structure as you list your skills and qualifications.

8 For Example… Work Experience YMCA Summer Youth Camp Leader (Job Title)
May 2012 – August 2012 (Dates) Responsibilities: (Notice parallel structure: all past tense verbs) Led arts, crafts, sports, games, camping and hobby workshops for groups of 8-10 year olds Monitored groups of up to seven children on weekly field trips to the zoo, water parks and on walking tours Made sure campers were dropped off and picked up safely

9 Skills and Interests Here are some examples: Skills
Again, notice parallel structure in bulleted lists: (all present progressive verbs in the first list, nouns in the second list) Skills Working effectively and enthusiastically with children Creating attractive posters and flyers using graphic software Following written instructions Building documents and presentations with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Certifications Lifeguard certificate CPR Certificate

10 Create your resume! Close this Power Point and return to our class website. Click on a resume template, save it in your Google Drive folder, and begin to fill in your information. You may use previously made resumes to assist the process. Remember to use Consistent formatting: consistent, professional font, capitalization of headings, parallel lists (i.e., bulleted lists begin with same part of speech, such as verbs) Edit well: check grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., and capitalize proper nouns
