2 Screencasting What is Screencasting?
A digital recording of a computer screen that includes audio It can be used for several purposes in the classroom is one step up from podcasting and has a lot of possibilities for online teaching and learning (Richardson, 2010)

3 Jing What is Jing? -A free resource that allows you to capture an image of the computer screen, record what you do, and share with others

4 Video about Screencast & Jing

5 How Does This Technology Support the Vision for Technology Use in our School?
As described in the overall mission of the Newton County Theme School, the purpose is to become a world-class school where students engage in rigorous and well-rounded curriculum in a safe and motivating environment that prepares them for future learning and life beyond school. Within this context, we believe that technology is a learning tool that can be used to help students be engaged, well rounded, and motivated for continuous learning. Teachers, administrators, support staff, students, parents, and community members must work collaboratively to ensure that varieties of technology are accessible and being utilized as teaching tools. Screencasts and Jing are tools that will help N.C.T.S. achieve their vision.

6 Evaluation of How Well Screencasting supports N. C. T. S
Evaluation of How Well Screencasting supports N.C.T.S. Vision for Technology Use. Screencasts and Jing supports N.C.T.S. Vision for Technology Use and can be evaluated by student, teacher, and administrator surveys. Teacher observation can also be an evaluation tool.

7 Objectives Both Screencasts and Jing are learning tools that can be used to help improve student achievement. Both programs can be used as instructional strategies that create lessons that are engaging, well rounded, and that motivate students for continuous learning. Teachers, administrators, support staff, students, parents, and community can access screencasts and use them as tools.

8 Key Benefits Instruction can be viewed several times as needed.
The screencasts can be watched at home and school. The screencasts can be differentiated. Teachers create the screencast once, but it can be used several times and they can share them with their colleagues. Students can also make screencasts of their presentations.

9 Target Population The Newton County Theme School has roughly 746 students in grades K-8th 24.5 % qualifying for free and reduced lunch The ethnic distribution is as follows: 47.6 % white, 2.1% Hispanic, 45.8% black and 3.2 multiracial. 0% with limited English proficiency 5% with disabilities

10 Target Population cont’d
I would recommend this tool be used both at school and at home by all students K- 8th grade. If students don’t have access to a computer there must be time during the school day that they can access a computer. All classrooms have 4 computers The school has a Mini Computer lab with 17 computers The library has 18 computers The school has 2 laptop carts (15 laptops in each cart) Screencast and Jing can be used by all students at N.C.T.S.

11 Equipment and Software
Wireless access Wi-Fi for the laptops Headphones Microphones Devices must have Flash installed on them, because the only way to view the screencast is through Jing Computers / laptops

12 Technical Support Jing has their own technical support that can be found on this website: Screencast has their own technical support that can be found on this website:

13 Limitations Devices must have Flash installed on them, because the only way to view the screencast is through Jing. This could affect students and classes that encourage bringing your own devices. At school and home students must have access to the internet when viewing screencasts.

14 Cost of the Technology Jing and Screecast. Com are both FREE resources
Flash must be installed on devices Computers and laptops that the school already has can be used

15 Potential Funding Sources
Local Grants such as: -Snapping Shoals -Georgia Power The school’s PTO has funds for technology

16 How Do We Use This Technology?
Teachers can use this technology during lessons that are content standards and student technology standards aligned. The lessons can be differentiated. The screencasts can focus on the remediation or acceleration of information,. Teachers can use screencasts as communication for classroom and school information.

17 How Do We Use This Technology? Cont’d
Students can use it to record their presentations and then share them on a classroom Wiki page. This will encourage authentic learning opportunities for each student. Teachers can create virtual field trips for students.

18 Implementation Plan Professional learning could occur monthly during planning time. The Technology Coach can also send out helpful handouts about screencast and Jing.

19 Implementation Plan Continued
Teachers will create at least one screencast per week. Teachers will upload screencasts to the school’s MyBigCampus site. Administrators will check to make sure that screencasts are being used in the classroom as an instructional tool.

20 Evaluation of Research
As suggested by Will Richardson (2010), the possibilities with screencasting are enormous. Here are a few of his ideas on how to use it in your classroom: Create training videos for peers Narrate PowerPoint tours for parents Make video collections of exemplary student work Have students annotate their work in voice as they show it on the screen Have students create their own Internet tours Have students read stories or poetry they write with accompanying visuals they have created or found Add visuals to some of the podcast ideas you've seen

21 Evaluation of Research
According to the article, Screencasting to Engage Learning written by Micheal Ruffini Screencasts can provide learners a student-centered and engaging learning experience in both distance and traditional learning settings. To align screencasts with lesson objectives, goals, assessment practices, and standards, instructors can create their own screencasts rather than searching through the thousands of educational screencast videos on the web. Good educational screencasts depend not only on thorough planning but also on thoughtful and careful editing to re-sequence lesson elements, eliminate awkward and unnecessary portions, and craft a focused, easy-to-follow presentation that uses students' time efficiently.

22 Evaluation of Research
Screencasting has been used as a teaching tool in a variety of fields, with mostly positive results reported, specifically in relation to providing students with information and creating additional avenues of access to teaching and materials. In the field of chemical engineering, screencasting has served as an effective supplement to class time and textbooks (Falconer, deGrazia, Medlin, and Holmberg 2009). A study of student perceptions and test scores in an embryology course that used screencasting to present lectures demonstrated enhanced learning and a positive effect on student outcomes (Evans 2011). Asynchronous access to learning materials—both to make up for missed classes as well as to review materials covered in class—is another benefit of screencasting in the classroom (Vondracek 2011, Yee and Hargis 2010).

23 Reflections I believe that screencasting is beneficial for teachers, students, and parents. Jing is a FREE resource that can be utilized to improve student achievement. Once teachers learn how to screencast it is a skill that can be applicable to every subject area. Files can be saved and used repeatedly.

24 Reflections After evaluating this emerging technology I realize that useful tools don’t always have to be expensive and difficult to use. This experience strengthened my professional practice by encouraging me to search for resources and to share them with my colleagues. I will definitely utilize this tool and encourage others to do the same.
