1 Steps of a Lesson – Apply

2 Small Group Discussion
What do you think is the difference between having young learners of English practice new language and apply new language? Preview The next step is Apply. Divide participants into groups of three or four, and ask them to discuss the prompt. Ask for a few new voices (people who haven’t shared yet) to share responses with the whole group.

3 Video  In this segment, listen for an explanation and an example of how young learners of English can apply new language.  Play the video.

4 Which of the following is NOT true about the Apply stage?
Students use the new language in a personalized way. Students use the language in a realistic way. Students connect the language to their own lives. Students talk only about themselves. Review 1 Let’s review a few big ideas about the application stage of a lesson. Ask participants to briefly write an explanation and example of the “Apply” stage of a lesson on their Handout 5.1. Answer: Students talk only about themselves.

5 Sort the characteristics into the correct column.
Practice Apply Review 2  Let’s take a minute to compare two lesson stages: practice and apply.  Note to Trainer:  If participants need help, give them examples of a practice activity and an apply activity.  A practice activity might involve students holding up the sentence frames “I don’t have to” or “I have to” as the teacher reads a list of chores; i.e. “...do the dishes.”  An apply activity might involve students asking each other questions about what items they have at home that can be recycled.  Have participants do the activity on the screen. Call on participants to categorize each item.  Answers:  Practice: supported; prepares students for real communication; helps students recognize new language Apply: independent; connects to student lives; engages students in real communication  engages students in real communication independent connects to student lives helps students recognize new language prepares students for real communication supported
