Protein Synthesis
2
The Players Molecules: Organelles DNA RNA Amino Acids
Here are the major players in the process of protein synthesis. The molecules are DNA, RNA and the amino acids we met earlier in biomolecules. The organelles include the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi
3
The Field Transcription occurs in the nucleus where the DNA is copied or transcribed into RNA. The RNA move out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm where it attached to waiting ribosomes. There the message is translated into protein. Once complete, the protein makes its way to the Golgi apparatus where it is finished and prepared for its final destination either in, on or outside of the cell.
4
Step 1 - Transcription in the Nucleus
DNA unzips mRNA is created using the DNA as a template mRNA leaves the nucleus through nuclear pores
5
Step 2a – Translation mRNA attaches to ribosome
tRNA brings in amino acids Codon-anticodon match
6
Step 2b – Elongation 4. Protein chain elongates by dehydration synthesis
7
Step 2c – Termination 5. Message done Protein released
Ribosome falls apart mRNA breaks up
8
Step 3 – Golgi Post Processing
Protein with RER membrane moves to Golgi Protein “finishing” in Golgi Protein released to final destination
