Implement a workflow and laboratory informatics system Use barcodes on 100% of samples coming into SLD Implement a system that complies with the requirements of the accrediting agencies (i.e. College of American Pathologists, Environmental Protection Agency) Technical Objectives Ability to interoperate with information exchanges Improve security, data integrity and data management through system consolidation

5 Project Accomplishments
Implementation Complete! Entire Lab is using the LIMS 100% of samples have barcodes Implemented in Five phases Reportable conditions sample results being sent electronically Legacy systems have been archived Will still be accessible for current year plus two IT systems are redundant at database and traffic control layers

6 Lessons From The Lab Good requirements are a must
Juggling priorities and deadlines Testing and scripts development System tester are key IT takes a team Pick a good vendor Program is driver

7 Lessons from IT and PM Project management Side Need Program Leadership
Retainage is tricky Large multi-year projects need a finance committee Need Program Leadership They have the need, IT just has the tools. Technology Choices count Flexibility helps Choose what you can support
