Presentation on theme: "Making Informed Decisions in MTSS through Family Engagement Data"— Presentation transcript:

Making Informed Decisions in MTSS through Family Engagement Data
The evidence is consistent, positive, and convincing: families have a major influence on their children’s achievement both in school and throughout life. (A New Wave of Evidence, Henderson and Mapp, 2002).

Yet for decades, measuring and making informed decisions about family engagement based on data has proven to be challenging both locally and nationally.

This is primarily due to the fact that there has not been a reliable statewide tool available to measure family engagement that is based on solid research.

(KPIRC) a project of the KSDE Technical Assistance Systems Network (TASN) focuses on building the capacity of educators to engage families in their children’s education. Slide of TASN logo and KPIRC logo.

KPIRC promotes meaningful family engagement at all levels of education by providing professional learning on the research, benefits, and evidenced based practices that link families to their children’s education.

In 2016, KPIRC and the TASN evaluation team to developed a NEW Family Engagement Survey for schools implementing (MTSS) that is now available for all schools.

The NEW Survey is aligned with these Standards.
In 2008, the KS State Board of Education endorsed the PTA National Standards as a framework for family engagement. The NEW Survey is aligned with these Standards. (Slide of PTA Standards)

The survey is available in English, Spanish and Hmong and consists of 15 statements based on a 5 pt. Likert Scale from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree.

Last year, most schools distributed the survey following the spring parent/teacher conferences via laptop though now the survey is available online.

At DistrictTools.org districts/schools can register to administer the Family Engagement Survey. When registering, a URL is created for the survey that can then be disseminated to parents/guardians.

In MTSS schools, instructional staff are also responsible for completing School Implementation Scales which include family engagement statements in Empowering Culture, Instruction, Curriculum, and Assessment.

All survey data is available in real-time summaries
All survey data is available in real-time summaries. Results are graphed according to each standard and PDF reports are available for download.

A Building Leadership Team may then share this report with other instructional staff to make informed decisions about areas of family engagement to include in their Tiered Protocols.

In 2016, over 200 trainings, coaching opportunities and/or technical assistance were provided by KPIRC to 64 districts across Kansas. (Slide of KS map)

Training provided by KPIRC was of high quality, as illustrated by summarized results from 241 evaluations collected at 7 trainings.

At KPIRC trainings, numerous educators said they learned new skills to better engage parents in their children’s education and build family-school- community partnerships.

This represented 27 buildings in four districts.
In 2016, parents of nearly 3,000 students in MTSS schools completed the Family Engagement Survey in either English or Spanish. This represented 27 buildings in four districts. (MTSS Family Engagement Survey Chart here).

The School implementation Scale was completed by 199 instructional staff and data were used to make informed decisions about family engagement strengths and areas for improvement. (Teachers Reflected Chart on slide here).

To further build the capacity of educators to engage families, KPIRC is developing the Engaging All Families series. Two of the modules are complete with 8 more by fall of 2017.

Finally, partnerships between KSDE, KPIRC, and TASN evaluators creates an environment where Kansans Can make informed decisions using Family Engagement data. (Kansas Can slide)
