3 Let’s Get Ready! Part 1: Individual / Part 2: Book Club group
Take out the following materials Your book “Chasing Beautiful Questions” article Your journal Put everything else away! You’ll move around!

4 Whole Class What is a “beautiful question”?
One that leads to innovation and profound change Beautiful questions take time and effort and energy to create. We’ll start that process today! Your job in the individual part of today’s work is to start thinking about your beautiful question. If you can write all three parts (why/what if/how), that’s awesome!! If not, that’s okay too! Start little get big!

5 Part 1 – Individual Ask a question about something in the book you read. Make sure it can’t be answered “yes” or “no”. Write this in your journal! Part or all of a beautiful question  Identify a “big idea” (abstract noun) in your question. Write this in your journal also!

6 Part 2 – Book Club group This is our first Book Club meeting! Your job today is to share about your experience reading your book, and to share your question and your “big idea” (abstract noun). Take notes in your journal about each others’ questions and abstract nouns. Add your own thoughts as well!

9 Whole Class What is a “beautiful question”?
Beautiful questions take time and effort and energy to create. We’ll continue that process today! Your job in the individual part of today’s work is to continue to develop your beautiful question. Try to write all three parts (why/what if/how).

10 Part 1 – Individual Review your individual work from last Wednesday’s Book Club You wrote part or all of a beautiful question You also identified one or more “big ideas” (abstract nouns) in your question. Continue working with your question!! Add new understanding from the reading you’ve done Look at the entire question. Then look at each word. Change a few words. How do they change the question?

11 Part 2 – Book Club group Introduce yourselves and share your favorite place to read Review your discussions from last week’s Book Club Ask each other any questions you have of the book, like characters, settings, conflicts, etc. Discuss your modified Beautiful Questions Practice interviewing each other from the perspective of characters in the book Set a goal/intention for next Wednesday’s Book Club

Take out the following materials ½ sheet of notebook paper Your book Your journal Put everything else away! You’ll move around!

14 Check for Understanding
Individual “check for understanding” How does changing the speaker, audience, or format influence the telling of a story? Use detail in your answer! Think about the work we’ve been doing in class all week with “one story/two versions”

15 Part 2 – Book Club group Say hello and explain your favorite summertime memory Review your discussions from last week’s Book Club Ask each other any questions you have of the book, like characters, settings, conflicts, etc. Discuss applying different speakers, audiences, and formats to the story in your book. How would the story be different if… ?? Practice interviewing each other from the perspective of characters in the book Set a goal/intention for next Wednesday’s Book Club – LAST ONE

18 Part 1 – Individual Review the “Chasing Beautiful Questions” article
What are the three parts of a beautiful question? Beautiful questions are both challenging and exciting. How so? Continue working with your question!! You’ve gone through a progression of steps for your Beautiful Question about your Book Club book. Edit and revise your Beautiful Question into a “final” draft Use a sheet of printer paper. Write out your Beautiful Question. Be neat and detailed. These will hang up in the room and hallway!

19 Part 2 – LAST Book Club group
Say hello and share your favorite memory from 9th grade so far Review your discussions from last week’s Book Club Ask each other any questions you have of the book, like characters, settings, conflicts, etc. Discuss the WHOLE BOOK. Talk about the main character and his/her coming of age. Have detailed and descriptive conversations and support your statements with evidence from the text. Reflect on Book Club. What do you think??
