Gravity
2
What is gravity? A force of attraction between objects.
Galileo “discovered” gravity. (Dropping objects from Leaning Tower of Pisa) The force that pulls objects towards the center of the earth. Acceleration is 9.8 meters/second2
3
Demo-Holding weights Why is it hard to hold weights out to your side? Will it get harder the higher from the ground you go? Explain. Why is a heavier weight harder to hold? Would it be easier or harder on Mount Everest? The moon? Is there gravity in space?
5
Gravitational attraction depends on…
The mass of the objects The distance between objects
7
What is mass? The amount of matter in an object.
Measured in grams or kilograms. To measure the mass of an object, use a balance.
8
What is the difference between mass and weight?
9
Mass vs. Weight Mass is the amount of matter in something.
Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity.
11
What is work? When a force applied to an object, moves that object.
Work = Force x Distance
12
What is force? Something that causes a change in the motion of an object.
13
What is a load? The force exerted on a object.
