Friction & Gravity

Friction Friction is the force that two surfaces exert on each other.
The force of friction depends on how hard the surfaces push together and the types of surfaces involved.

Types of Friction Static Friction is the friction that acts on objects that are not moving. Sliding Friction occurs when two solid surfaces slide over each other.

Rolling Friction occurs when an object has wheels or rolls
Fluid Friction occurs when a solid object moves through a fluid.

Gravity Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward each other.
The law of universal gravitation states that the force of gravity acts between all objects in the universe. Two factors affect the gravitational attraction between objects: mass and distance.

Mass vs. Weight Mass – measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight – force of gravity on a person or object (mass X the force of gravity)
