2 The Slavery Debate The United States had acquired a vast territory -- the result of its war with Mexico. Should the territory allow slavery, or should it be declared free? Or maybe the inhabitants should be allowed to choose for themselves?

Gold Rush California applies to become free state South wants Southern California as slave territory Texas claims territory as far as the Rio Grande New Mexico resists Texas, applies to be free state

5 After the Compromise of 1850

6 Compromise of 1850 Texas would give up the land in dispute and would be given 10 million dollars -- money it would use to pay off its debt to Mexico. New Mexico and Utah become territories with slavery left to popular sovereignty. California is admitted undivided as a free state, denying Southern expansion to the Pacific
