1 Department of Computer Science & Automation Master RCSE
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Andreas Mitschele-Thiel Head of studies committee

2 Research in Computer & Systems Engineering
Goals: International Computer Science program at Ilmenau University of Technology Teaching language: English Teaching focus on research areas of the faculty: software & systems engineering, computer engineering, automation, ... Preparation for research in academia and industry

3 Support for intl. students
Individual program adjustable to your knowledge and interests employing project-oriented studies, self studies and group studies Research focus by Integration of students in research groups Seminars on research topics Training of research skills Lectures are the most inefficient method of learning! Much better results with discussions, study groups, projects, peer teaching, i.e. anything that requires active participation of students

4 Some remarks on learning
Bloom´s Taxonomy evaluate analyze apply understand remember Produce new or original work Design, assemble, construct, conjecture, develop, formulate, author, investigate create Justify a stand or decision appraise, argue, defend, judge, select, support, value, critique, weigh Draw connections among ideas differentiate, oranize, relate, compare, constrast, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, test Use information in new situations execute, implement, solve, use, demonstrate, interpret, operate, schedule, sketch Explain ideas or concepts classify, describe, discuss, explain, identify, locate, recognize, report, select, translate Recall facts and basic concepts define, duplicate, list, memorize, repeat, state

5 Some remarks on learning

14 Regulations and documents
Master's Examination Regulation - General Terms for Master degrees (Prüfungsordnung, allgemeiner Teil) Master's Examination Regulation - Special Terms for „Research in Computer & Systems Engineering“ (Prüfungsordnung für Studiengang) Study Regulations (Studienordnung) for „Research in Computer & Systems Engineering“ To be found at ➠ Documents & Regulations

15 Non-exam courses (certificates)
No exams for some courses: lab training, research skills, German courses, internship Activities needed to get the credits are defined by the lecturer, e.g. giving a talk, writing a report perform some experiments and report, ... Any number of trials allowed Grade will not influence your final grade

16 Exams Apply online using our Thoska system
For winter term: January 2019 Withdrawal from exams: possible up to 4 days before the scheduled date of the exam without reason - withdrawal from oral exams: file a form - withdrawal from written exams: Thoska system After this period: medical certificate required (by form)

17 Deadline and re-examination
We recommend taking the exams in the semester defined in the examination regulations Automatic fail in the 8th semester if not registed for the exam before You may retry every failed exam once (1. Wiederholungsprüfung) Up to 4 exams may be taken three times (2. Wiederholungsprüfung Deadline for re-examinations is two semesters Bisher: If you don‘t take an exam after your 8th semester, you will be registered automatically (=failed)

18 Free attempts and grade improvements
If you take your exam in the scheduled semester of the study plan (curriculum) but don´t pass, you may use a free attempt Thus, your second attempt will count as your first try Grade improvements: If you pass an exam in the scheduled semester of the study plan (curriculum) you can retry this exam as a grade improvement The best result counts! You have to register for both kinds of bonuses with a form

19 Final grade for Master‘s degree
Grades for modules: based on grades for the individual courses weighted by the credit points for the course Final grade: based on the grades for modules incl. Master‘s thesis

20 Some remarks on cultural differences
Germans strong in reasoning good understanding of basics highly self-critical straight communication Internationals very active participants higher variance in knowledge and capabilities very optimistic about own capabilities and knowledge To allow you to better understand our expectations – some remarks on cultural differences My personal experience: - Lack of understanding of our requirements at an university

21 Teachers expectations
Study hard – of course! Study continuously – memorizing things just for the exam is useless! Self-organize yourself! Digest and question content of lectures to get a deeper understanding Question your knowledge yourself at any time and before the exam! Misconception about own knowledge

22 Finally, ... we wish you ... ... successful studies and
... a pleasant stay in Ilmenau, Thuringia and Germany.
