1 The Presidency of Thomas Jefferson
Term: Presidential Number: 3 Party: Democratic-Republican

2 The Election of 1800 Jefferson tied with Aaron Burr for the Democratic-Republican Party (Each had 73 votes) and Adams had less votes Had to be settled with the House of Representatives under the leadership of Alexander Hamilton They went with Jefferson as the President and Burr as the Vice President Burr later shot and killed Hamilton in a duel!!!

3 The Louisiana Purchase
Believe in a strict interpretation of the Constitution, but tended to follow it loosely. Purchased Louisiana Territory from France (France was broke) even though the President didn’t have the power to purchase land He was used the “Elastic Clause” of the Constitution to back his actions- gives the government power to do things that are “necessary and proper”. He purchased the Louisiana Territory for $15 million and gave the United States almost a million additional acres of land

5 Lewis and Clark Expeditions
Jefferson wanted to know about the new territory He sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore land between St. Louis, Missouri and the Pacific Ocean The trip took 16 months They charted trails, mapped rivers and mountain ranges, wrote descriptions, collected samples of unfamiliar animals and plants, and recorded facts about Native American tribes. Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean and laid claim to Oregon for the United States. This was the beginnings of “Manifest Destiny”- it was destined for America to expand out west!

7 Other Events of Jefferson’s Presidency
Marbury vs. Madison- This case was ruled on and gave the Supreme Court the power of “judicial review” (in other words, the Supreme Court as the power to review federal law) Impressment of American sail0rs- Great Britain and France were once AGAIN at war. Both countries were harassing American sailors at sea (Great Britain more so than France) and holding them hostage until they swear to serve for Great Britain. Jefferson wanted to avoid war, but was feeling pressure over it. He chose, instead, place an embargo on Great Britain. War comes later when James Madison becomes president.
