Monday December 5th, 2016 EQ- What is deviance? How does deviance enforce conformity? Deviance is described as behavior that departs from societal or groups norms. Think back to the ’s, what behavior was considered to be deviant when your parents were in high school? Is this behavior no longer thought to be a departure from societal norm? What is Deviance? Deviance – behavior that departs from societal and group norms Can be negative or positive 1. Negative Deviance- involves behavior that fails to meet accepted norms 2. Positive Deviance-involves behavior that overconforms to social expectations

Labeling Deviants are labeled as so by dominant social groups
Deviants obstruct the function of society Deviants represent challenges to the mainstream Deviants may have lost key power struggles

Reasons People are “Normal”
Belong to a dominant social or cultural group Desire to belong to such a group Accepted the culture of the dominant group They have been socially controlled to act in certain ways and believe certain things

Reasons People are “Deviant”
Upbringing is different from dominant norms Simply rebelling or acting out for attention Self-concept has been developed to believe they are deviant Others treat the individual as a deviant

Social Control How dominant groups in society promote conformity to societal norms.

Social Control Internal Social Control – lies within the individual
Developed during the socialization process Knowing the difference between right and wrong External Social Control – based on social sanctions Established to force CONFORMITY; positive sanctions- awards, increase in allowances, promotions, smile pf approvals Negative sanctions- criticism, fines, and imprisonment
