Definitions Gender – refers to an individual’s anatomical sex
Gender Identity – an individual’s personal sense of maleness or femaleness Gender Role – Outward expression of gender identity according to cultural and social expectations Sex Role – anatomically limited to one gender (i.e. gestating and giving birth being limited to females)

Sexual Orientation – refers to a person’s attraction to members of the same sex (homosexual) other sexes (heterosexual) or both sexes (bisexual) All of these – gender, sexual assignment, gender identity, gender role, sex role, and sexual orientation – for an individual’s sexual identity.

What names do boys/girls get called when they try to step outside of this “box”? What are the physical consequences do boys/girls when they step outside of the “box”?

Discussion questions What is the purpose of these names and actions?
Where do these message about gender come from? How are they different depending on your culture, religion, & age? Why do people care whether or not we stay in the boxes? What might happen if we didn’t?

In a marriage the man should be responsible for the financial support of the family. It’s the man’s responsibility to ask the woman out on the first date. Women should pay equally for dates. People should be virgins when they get married. Both boys and girls should learn how to cook, sew, clean house, and do laundry. It is much better for children if the woman does not work outside of the home.
