2 Origin of Names Ralph: Originated as Rædwulf, from the Old English elements ræd (counsel) and wulf (wolf). The name evolved into Rauf, Raff, and Rafe in the Middle Ages, Ralf in the 16th century, and Ralph in the 18th century. Jack: Derived from the Hebrew name “Jacob” (Yaakov), meaning: To follow, to be behind To take over, evade, attack, outsmart  Possibly Celtic in origin, meaning "healthy, strong, full of vital energy.” Piggy: Pigs are the only animal to hunt on the island and Piggy himself is vulnerable and not respected. Simon: Derived from the Hebrew name “Shim’on,” meaning “He has heard.” In the New Testament, Simon is the name of several characters, including the man who carried the cross for Jesus. It was also the name of leading apostle Simon, also known as Peter (a name given to him by Jesus).Because of the apostle, this name has been common in the Christian world.  What could these origins of the characters’ names suggest about the characters themselves?
