1 Classification of Organisms
Cladistics Classification of Organisms

2 Do you remember? KPCOFGS King Philip Came Over From Great Spain.
What are the kingdoms? Animal, plant, fungi, protist, archaebacterial, eubacteria.

3

4 Scientific Names Puma, cougar, mountain lion, panther- all names for the same animal. This leads to confusion. Genus, Species (Binomial Nomenclature) Homo Sapien The goal of classification (systematics) is to organize living things into groups (taxa) that have biological meaning.

5 How do you think the study of evolution has changed classification?
Discuss with your group.

6 The Linnaean system- Based classification on visible differences
Modern Cladistics can study differences in the DNA of organisms Organisms that look alike might not be as closely related as we thought.

7 What are the two goals of classification (systematics)?
Write your answers in your notes please.

8 PHylogeny Classification based on evolutionary relationships
Clade- group of species that share a common ancestor. Includes ancestor and allof the decendants.

9 Nodes split lineages- speciation events Derived Character-Trait that arose in the most recent common ancestor

10 Which two organisms have the most recent common ancestor
Which two organisms have the most recent common ancestor? What derived Character did that ancestor evolve? Which clade do turtles belong to? Which clade do leopards belong to? Which clade do turtles and Leopards belong to?

11 Construct a cladogram Quick lab- pg. 520
