2. Immigration 1890-1910 reached the height of immigration in the U.S.
Caused by second Industrial Revolution
Largest groups to migrate are Chinese (railroad workers) through San Francisco, Jews from Eastern Europe (anti-Semite feelings beginning) through Ellis Island, NY
Riots and discrimination were causes of nativist feelings

3. Gilded Age Coined by Mark Twain
Some very rich but many others living in terrible conditions (huge disparity)
Encouraged political reformation of big business (monopolies/trusts) and unions to form for workers rights/labor laws
Jacob Riis, photographer/journalist, exposed true poverty of workers in urban areas

4. Black Americans Booker T. Washington, Atlanta Compromise Speech
Plessy v. Ferguson “separate but equal”
Already in effect in other states
Not overturned until Brown v. Board of Education during Civil Rights movement
Jim Crow laws after Reconstruction held Black Americans back from employment opportunities and civil rights

5. Reconstruction Amendments
13th abolished slavery
14th established equal rights under the law & citizenship
15th gave voting rights to all males, regardless of race

6. Native Americans
Increasing conflicts between western settlers and native tribes
Indians Appropriations Act: Reservations mandated, sovereignty stripped
Indian Wars: Sand Creek Massacre, Battle of Wounded Knee, Battle of Little Big Horn
Dawes Act-forced assimilation, land no longer shared by Natives, allotted by U.S. government within reservations
Geronimo, Apache, escaped from reservation. Eventually imprisoned.
