Canada is an enormous country covering a land area of more than 3.8 million square miles
It is the world’s second largest country in size
Most of the 32 million people that live in Canada live within 100 miles of its southern border with the U.S.
The northern part of Canada is so cold that very few people live there

Prairie – a large area of flat land covered by grasses and wildflowers but few trees
Canada has mountains, forests, hills, frozen land, and prairies
At least 1 million rivers and lakes lie within Canada
Hudson Bay a huge arm of the Atlantic Ocean is located in the northeast
The Mackenzie River, Canada’s longest river, lies in the northwest

Tundra – a large flat plain of frozen ground.
There are seven physical regions of Canada
The largest of the regions is the Canadian Shield
It is a large rocky region that curves around the Hudson Bay like a giant horseshoe
The Canadian Shield is about 1.8 million square miles
Because of the lack
of fertile soil not many
people live here

Southeast of the Canadian Shield is the St. Lawrence Lowlands Region
This is Canada’s smallest region but, it has the most industries and more people than any other region
It has the countries best farmland and a major waterway, the St. Lawrence Seaway

East of the St. Lawrence Lowlands region is the Appalachian region
This region has valleys, low mountains, forests, mineral resources, and an abundance of fish
Along the coast several underwater mountains rise above sea level to form large islands, one of which is Prince Edward Island

West of the Shield is the Interior Plains Region
The Southern part is prairies and farms, wheat is the main crop
The northern part of this region has poor soil and is too cold for farming, mostly covered by forests

The Western Mountain Region lies west of the Interior Plains and extends to the Pacific Ocean
In addition to its high mountains this region is known for its forests, mineral resources, rivers and wildlife

Stretching along the southern shore of the Hudson Bay is the Hudson Bay Lowlands Region
This region is mostly swamp lands

Fjord – a narrow inlet of sea between steep cliffs
Far north is the Arctic Islands region, it is too cold for trees to grow, the land is mostly tundra
It is made up of 12 large islands and hundreds of small ones, the islands have many glaciers, mountains and fjords
