Baucis and Philemon By Major Dunaway and Will Torfn

2 Background Zeus was displeased with mankind.
He wanted to destroy the earth and start over. Hermes and Zeus disguise themselves as travelers to test the hospitality of the people of Phrygia. Go from house to house begging, but at each house they are turned away harshly. At the very last house they visited they met an elderly couple named Baucis and Philemon.

3 Baucis and Philemon An elderly couple who honored the gods.
The only pious humans in their town. They were a very poor couple, but always accommodating to travellers. Were happy being poor because it “Wasn’t so bad when you were willing to own up to it, and a contented spirit helped too”.

4 Baucis and Philemon (cont.)

5 The Visit Zeus and Hermes enter the home and ask for food.
Baucis starts to make food while Philemon gave them their poor wine. The old couple soon noticed that the mixing bowl kept full, no matter how much wine was poured out. They try to cook their goose for the guests, but are unable to catch it.

6 The Revealing Zeus and Hermes reveal themselves.
Zeus destroys the surrounding village in a flood for their selfishness. Zeus turns the old cottage into a temple and say he will give the old couple whatever they wish, because of their kindness to travellers. They wished to be stewards of the temple, and to die together so one would not have to live without the other.
