2 Myth 5 – A Story of Hospitality 1. What order does Zeus give to mortals? He orders the people on earth to give food, drink, and shelter to any stranger in the land. 2. How did Zeus test the hospitality of the inhabitants of Phrygia? Zeus went to Phrygia disguised as a beggar and knocked on doors to see if he would be offered hospitality.

4 3. Who went with him? Hermes disguised himself and went with Zeus. 4. How did Zeus punish the other Phrygian residents? He flooded the entire town killing everyone except Baucis and Philemon.

5 5. What were two requests Baucis and Philemon made of Zeus? Their first request was to be servants in the new temple. Their second request was to die at the same time.

6 6. What final reward did Zeus give to them? When the old couple were ready to die he transformed their bodies into an intertwined oak and linden tree.

7 Myth 6 - Atalanta and Hippomenes 1. Why did Atalanta wish to avoid marriage? A prophet had told her that marriage would kill her, so she decided not to marry. 2. What did her suitors have to do in order to be successful at winning her hand in marriage? The successful suitor had to be able to beat her in a foot race. The unsuccessful suitors would be executed.

8 3. How did Hippomenes manage to win her? He was given three golden apples by Venus, and he threw these in front of her during the race thereby distracting her and causing her to lose.

9 4. Why were both punished? They failed to thank Venus for her help in bringing them together. 5. What was their punishment? They were turned into lions and harnessed to the chariot of Rhea.

10 Myth 7 - The Perfect Woman 1. Who was Pygmalion? He was a very talented sculptor. 2. Which goddess did he offer a prayer to? He prayed to the goddess Aphrodite. 3. What was the prayer? He asked that Aphrodite give him a wife who resembled his statue.

11 4. How was the prayer granted? He went back home an found that his statue had come to life.

12 5. What does Pygmalion name his wife? He names her Galatea.

13 Myth 8 - Pyramus and Thisbe 1. What was the problem with Pyramus and Thisbe’s relationship? Their parents objected to their relationship. 2. What plan did they make? They arranged to meet at dusk under a white mulberry tree that stood just outside the city walls. 3. How did Thisbe’s veil complicate things? She dropped her veil, and the lion picked it up and got blood on it. Then Pyramus believed she had been killed.

15 4. What happens to Pyramus? He killed himself with his sword. 5. What happens to Thisbe? She killed herself with Pyramus’ sword. 6. What was the origin of the purple fruit of the mulberry tree? The purple fruit came from the comingled blood of the lovers.

16 7. This myth was the basis for which Shakespearean play? This myth was the basis for Romeo and Juliet.
