4 Direct Characterization

5 Indirect Characterization
an aspect of a character the author does not say outright, but implies “He looked the boy up and down as if he had never seen a child before and wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do with one: eat it, ignore it, or kick it down the stairs” What do we know about this man, based on how he’s described here?

6 Find your 2 o’clock Partner
Read through the different examples of indirect characterization and write down what you can infer about each Character.

7 Turn and talk to a partner:
why would the author choose to tell a story about this time period from the perspective of a child?

8 Writing exercise: write about one of the time periods below from the perspective of a 9-year old child: American 1920’s American Great Depression WWI the atomic bomb

9 Homework: Chapters 4-6 and packet Due Tuesday
