Please complete the writing for ICTW based on the painting on the next slide. 1.Describe this painting in at least six sentences. 2.What do you think the relationship is between the characters? What do you see that makes you say that (what evidence supports your response)? 3.How many different points of view are in the painting? 4.What viewpoints might not be so obvious? 5.What do you think is the artist’s point of view? 6.Choose three points of view in this painting. 1.Tell the story of this work of art from each point of view. (No more than four sentences each). 2.Imagine and write a dialogue between the characters—what would they say? Why? (No more than ten lines) 7.How is the text (the painting) different if told from each character’s point of view?

5 Diction 2 Read and think: M.C. heard him scramble and strain his way up the slope of Sarah's mountain. Virginia Hamilton, M.C. Higgins, the Great Talk about it: 1.What does it mean to scramble and strain up a mountain? Close your eyes and try to get a picture of someone scrambling and straining up a mountain. 2.How would it change your mental picture if we rewrote the sentence like this? M.C. heard him walk up the slope of Sarah's mountain.

6 Diction 2 Now you try it: Write a sentence describing someone slowly climbing up a flight of stairs. Use Hamilton's sentence as a model. Now you try it:

7 “The Gift of the Magi” Read and annotate the following information on O. Henry. When you are finished, use the information gleaned from this text to complete the SOAPSTone for “The Gift of the Magi.” –Some aspects you will have to make educated guesses, but some aspects you will have specific evidence from either this text or the story itself to support your responses. Staple this text to your SOAPSTone and turn it in when you are finished.
