1 Q1,J15 Read page 477 in the text book. Write a brief comparison between the text and the picture below. What do the text and the picture have in common?

2 Semi colons ; Can be used to separate lists when the items in a list already contain commas. See example. To join two (but no more than two) independent clauses together. See example.

3 Colons : To announce, introduce, or direct attention to a list, a quotation, or an example/explanation. Lists/series example: We covered many of the fundamentals in our writing class: grammar, punctuation, style, and voice. Quotation example: Shakespeare said it best: “To thine own self be true.” Example/explanation example: Many graduate students discover that there is a dark side to academia: late nights, high stress, and a crippling addiction to caffeinated beverages.

4 To connect two sentences when the second sentence
To connect two sentences when the second sentence summarizes, sharpens, or explains the first. Both sentences should be complete, and their content should be very closely related. Examples: Life is like a puzzle: half the fun is in trying to work it out. Columbia is a great place to go to school: we have so much school spirit.
