1 Weather and Climate

2 Getting Ready for this Unit
Many human activities have an effect on the climate in a region. List as many climate-changing human activities as you can. Once you have your list, categorize each human activity as either negative (for example, raises global temperature or increases pollution) or positive (lowers global temperature or decreases pollution)

3 Weather vs. Climate Imagine your friend in Australia asks you what it’s like outside where you live. What would you say? The details you are talking about are conditions of the atmosphere at a certain time and certain place Put simply, you’re talking about the weather

4 Climate vs. Weather What aspects of weather can we describe?
Temperature Wind speed Humidity Cloud cover Precipitation

5 Climate vs. Weather Weather conditions can change hourly, which is one reason people watch, read or listen to weather forecasts

6 Climate vs. Weather How is climate different from weather?
Weather describes current conditions of the atmosphere in a specific place at a specific time Weather changes are discussed in terms of short periods of time, such as hourly and daily Climate describes patterns of weather conditions within a large region over a long period of time Climate describes the typical weather you can expect in a region based on data collected over many years ‘CLIMATE IS WHAT YOU EXPECT, BUT WEATHER IS WHAT YOU GET’

7 Factors That Affect the Climate
Latitude (distance from the equator) Air circulation Ocean currents – water holds heat, coastal areas are warmer Local geography – mountains, lakes, etc.

8 Factors That Affect Temperature
Earth rotation – 24 hour day Earth revolution and axis tilt – days Air circulation
