NCI – National Cancer Institute – cancer research EPA – Environmental Protection Agency – protects the country’s air, water and land OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration- prevents injuries and safety of workers USDA – United States Department of Agriculture – leads anti-hunger effort, food stamps, school lunch and breakfast programs FSIS – Food Safety and Inspection Service – run by FDA, responsible for safety of meat, poultry and egg products WHO – World Health Organization – a United Nations organization which includes over 200 countries and territories. Works to eradicate diseases and address world pollution International Committeee of the Red Cross – provides emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, disease outbreaks and natural disasters DHHS – Department of Health and Human Services – oversees more than 300 health related programs which are administered by 13 agencies including CMS – Ceters for Medicare and Medicaid Services FDA – Food and Drug Administration NIH – National Institues of Health SAMHSA – Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration CDC – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention FTC – Federal Trade Commission

Go to the web-site of one of the national or international health organizations we spoke about during class Find a write-up or article about a current problem the organization is dealing with. Type up the answers the following questions What is the organization? What is the problem being dealt with? Who is or has been affected by the problem? What are the steps being taken to deal with the problem? Are there any controversies over the way the problem is being dealt with? If so, what are they? Is there a solution to the problem in the near future? What can you as an individual do to assist in the effort to eradicate the problem? Attach a copy of your article to your answers and turn it in next class.
