1 Elevation & Climate Elevation - the height of a region above sea level. Analyze Figure 4.19 on page 71. What affect does elevation have on temperature? An increase in elevation means a decrease in temperature. La Paz & Rio de Janeiro have similar dist. from ocean & similar latitude. La Paz is much colder because of higher elevation . La Paz, Bolivia Elevation = 3600m Coldest month = 9oC Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Elevation = 61m Coldest month= 25oC

2 Elevation & Precipitation
Windward - side of a mountain the wind blows toward. Leeward - side of mountain opposite from windward. Analyze Figure 4.20 on page 72. Places on windward side = more rain. Places on leeward side = less rain. Rain shadow - region on leeward side of mountain that receives little precipitation because most rain has fallen on the windward side.

3 Blue = Windward Brown = Leeward

4 What is the wettest location?
What is the driest location? What is the coldest location? What is the warmest location? Where is the rainshadow? Where is the leeward side? B D C A Complete # 40 and 41 on page 72.
