Who was William Shakespeare and what were his contributions to literature? Essential Question Class Session Monday, March 07, 20 Opening Session Students will create a KWL chart and discuss what they know about Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare, and Elizabethan Theatre. Students will listen to an introduction to Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet. Work Session Students will work in groups to translate the Prologue from Romeo and Juliet to modern text. Closing Session Students will begin reading Act 1; Scene 1 from Romeo and Juliet. See the notes about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Era on the website.

You have five minutes to do this. Take out your KWL chart from yesterday. Fill in the “Learned” part of your chart with any information you learned yesterday about William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, or the Elizabethan Period.

Opening Session Students will work in pairs to translate the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet to modern speech. Work Session Students will create a Shakespearean dictionary. Students will read Act One; Scene One of Romeo and Juliet. Closing Session Students will work in teams to act out Act One; Scene One of Romeo and Juliet.

Open your textbook to page 771. Work in groups of two to translate the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet to modern speech. Rewrite your new Prologue on a sheet of paper. You have 15 minutes.

As a class, we will read Act I; Scene I of Romeo and Juliet. Please follow along in your text, since you may have a quiz on this scene and your notes about Shakespeare and Elizabethan theatre tomorrow.

SHAKESPEARE IS MEANT TO BE SEEN AND PERFORMED NOT READ. In small groups, read and block this scene to be performed in front of the class. Look up words and phrases you do not know to help you or use No Fear Shakespeare.

Each group will show their scene to the class. I have foam pool noodles to use as swords. Remember, be respectful to one another.
