1 Welcome back! Quarter 2 Investigating Cells
GOALS FOR TODAY: 1.BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN CELL THEORY 2.KNOW THE PARTS OF A MICROSCOPE AND HOW TO USE IT

2 In notebook on half of page
Living Non-Living

3

4 With your neighbor Together Put the following characteristics on the correct side living or non living: 1. a. Are made of cells b. Are made of atoms and molecules 2. a. May do things that living things do, but not in a biological sense ( use energy like electricity, grow and develop like forming ice crystals, reproduce like a copy machine/stamp) 3. Grow and Develop 4. Respond and adapts to environment

5 Definition of Life Are Made of Cells Obtain and Use energy
Grow and Develop Reproduce Respond to their environment Adapt to their environment Are Made of Cells

6 Making Your Own Cell Booklet!
Get large piece of paper Fold in half 3 times (hamburger) Cut half way down the middle Open in up Fold hot dog way Bend together Number pages 1-8 Flip over and number pages 1-8 on the other side On page 1 write your title, name and period

7 Advisory- Choose one of the Three
Biome poem-Language Arts OR Silent Reading OR Cell Booklet- Science Finish Circle Map with Text Draw and Label Animal Cell

8 Create A Circle map on page 2
Resource ( where you got your information) What you find out about cells from the text book (Chapter 1 section 1) What you know about cells

9 October 14,15 Page 2 Finish Circle Map (Ch 1 section 1)- look for BOLD words Page 4 animal cell draw, color and label (Pg 21 in text) Page 5 Plant cell – color and label and glue in your booklet (for homework if not done today)

10 Background Information: Textbook “Cells and Heredity”
Find the contents (write down page) Write title and page # of Chapter 2 section 4 Write down Describe what is in the appendix and where it is Where is the glossary? Where is the index? Bold words, vocab words, questions Access Textbook website: moanaluamiddle.org

11 Monday Seat in your new seat please Take out your booklet
Make sure all pages are finished Go over lab stations together

12 Homework Booklet Check Today we will:
1- cover page 2-circle map 3-Double Bubble map of animal and plant cell 4 -animal cell 5 -plant cell 6- Bacteria cell 7-Your extra notes 8-Microscope Today we will: Label a bacteria cell and glue in your booklet Go over how to use a microscope Glue Microscope picture in your book page 8

13 Bacteria Cell http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/bactcell.htm
Microscope parts

14 Continue your booklets
1st side 1. Cover page, title, name, period 2. Cell circle map 3. Double Bubble map of animal and plant cell 4. Draw and label animal cell 5. Color and label plant cell 6. Color and label bacteria cell 7. notes 8. Label microscope

15 Using a Microscope 1. To carry a microscope, grasp the microscopes arm with one hand. Place your other hand under the base 2. Place the microscope on a table with the arm toward you. 3.Turn the coarse adjustment knob to raise the body tube. 4. Revolve the nosepiece until the low-power objective lens clicks into place. 5. Adjust the diaphragm. While looking through the eyepiece, also adjust the mirror until you see a bright white circle of light. Never use sunlight as a light source 6.Place a slide on the stage. Center the specimen over the opening on the stage. Use the stage clips to hold the slide in place. GLASS SLIDES ARE FRAGILE 7.Carefullly turn the coarse adjustment knob to lower the body tube until the low-power objective almost touches the slide. 8.Look into the eyepiece and turn the knob until the specimen is focused. 9.Switch the high power objective lens, look at microscope from the side. Revolve the nosepiece until the high-power objective lens clicks into place. Make sure the lens does not hit the slide. 10. Looking through the eyepiece, turn the fine adjustment knob until the specimen comes into focus.

16 Unicellular (single celled) Examples: archaea, bacteria (yogurt)
Living Things Prokaryote Eukaryote Unicellular (single celled) Examples: archaea, bacteria (yogurt) Have organelles Alive No nucleus Can be unicellular or multicellular Examples: plants, fungi, protist, animals Have Organelles Has a true nucleus Alive

17 Living Things Prokarya ------------ Eukarya
Arhaea Bacteria Plant-- Animal Fungi Protist
