2 WMO Application Areas Global Numerical Weather Prediction
Definition: an activity involving primary use of observations, in a chain of activities which allow NMHSs or other organizations to render services contributing to public safety, socio-economic well-being and development in their respective countries, in a specific domain related to weather, climate and water. The concept of a WMO Application Area is used in the framework of the WMO Rolling Review of Requirements (RRR) and describes a homogeneous activity for which it is possible to compile a consistent set of observational user requirements agreed by community experts working operationally in this area. Sea surface height anomaly - high impact on ocean forecasting systems Sea level – wide range of requirements for sea level data from early detection of tsunamis to long-term trends of sea level rise) Wave parameters – extreme wave and wind gust events significantly constrain shipping and other marine operations (collocate wind and wave sensors required) Surface pressure – SLP from drifting and moored buoys to detect and monitor atmospheric phenomena over the oceans (e.g. tropical cyclones) that significantly constrain shipping Visibility –critical for operations and still very limited

5 ADDITIONAL OBSERVATION REQUIREMENTS FROM WMO ROLLING REVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS (RRR) (JCOMM-5-d04-2(2)-ROLLING-REVIEW-REQUIREMENTS-draft1_en) This document includes 1 proposed decision: draft Decision 4.2(2)/1 — Contribution to the Rolling Review of Requirements; Annex includes critical marine meteorological and oceanographic variables where JCOMM has identified gap Observations Programme Area requested to consider in its workplan, and in dialogue with funders and implementers of the observing networks, how these critical variables could be better observed SFSPA is requested to assist the Point of Contact for Ocean Applications in reviewing and updating the Statement of Guidance for Ocean Applications Members/Member States are urged to contribute to the implementation of meto-oceano observing systems for achieving the implementation targets of ocean observing networks & pay attention to the critical variables in the Annex
