2. Introduction
An “A” “B” or “C” intro includes an opening, thesis, and overview. Read your introduction to double-check you have all three elements.

3. Opening
“A” = the opening is original and creative; it relates directly to the central topic
“B” = the opening is clear and well-phrased; it relates clearly to the central topic
“C” = the opening is simple and clear; it relates clearly to the central topic
“D” = it is unclear how the opening relates to the thesis
“F” = there is no opening!

4. Thesis
“A” = includes all required elements AND it is phrased in an original way, not like class examples
“B” = a clear statement w/ all required elements AND is based on class examples
“C” = based on class examples, missing an element
“D” = based on class examples, missing two or more elements

5. Overview
“A” = mentions central idea from each body paragraph clearly and originally, without summarizing anything in the stor(ies)
“B” = mentions central idea from each body paragraph clearly and simply; no summary from stories
“C” = mentions central idea from each body paragraph clearly and simply; adds summary
“D” = doesn’t match up w/ body paragraphs exactly, but almost
“F” = it’s not there!

6. Body Paragraph – Topic Sentence
“A” = includes all required elements, phrased in an original way
“B”/”C” = includes all required elements, sounds like class examples
“D” = missing a required element
“F” = missing two or more required elements

7. Body Paragraph - RDFs
“A” = RDF is ONLY summary of WHAT HAPPENS in the story when the irony occurs
“B”/”C” = RDF gives too little or too much summary from the story
“D” = RDF summary from the story doesn’t really match with where the irony happens
“F” = no summary!

8. Body Para – Irony type/definition
“A”/”B” = Irony type and definition is in its own sentence between the RDF and E
“C” = Irony type and definition are there, but difficult to find
“D” = Irony type given, but no definition
“F” = Can’t find it!

9. Body Paragraph – E (explanation)
“A”/”B” = explanation is appropriate for the type of irony – situational or dramatic; student accurately explains the irony
“C” = explanation is appropriate for the type of irony; student does a fair job explaining the irony, but maybe mixes it up w/ summary
“D” = explanation is not complete, but it is apparent the student tried to explain the irony

10. Final Key Ingredient
“A”/”B” = Student makes it clear what emotion is caused by the irony
“C”/”D” = Student claims only that the reader experiences “surprise” or “suspense”
“F” = Student fails to identify how the irony affects the reader emotionally
