Groups of 8

 You will read 8 different essays  Each time you read an essay, you will have a different focus.  Your comments on the paper need to be limited to your focus at the time.  Any questions????

 Do I have to read every paper?  YES!  Do I have to comment on every paper?  YES!  What if I don’t find anything wrong?  Point out the great things that they did?  What if I don’t understand what they wrote?  Ask questions in the margin!

 Spelling and Grammar  Read slowly and carefully  Underline misspelled words and write Sp.  Change punctuation errors  Look for ways to combine simple sentences  Be on the lookout for errors in comma usage  Identify awkward sentences or phrasing

 Structure  Label each section of the essay: Intro Context Claim 1 Claim 2 Claim 3 Counterclaim 1 Counterclaim 2 Counterclaim 3 Conclusion  Check Body Paragraphs for  Topic Sentence  Concrete Details  Commentary  Commentary (may have more than two each quote)  CD, CM, CM may repeat  Concluding Sentence

 Frame  Identify the type of frame used: Single word/image Allusions Personal Anecdote  Does it need to be expanded? Condensed?  Does it tie to the general idea or thesis?  Is it referenced in the conclusion and in the title?  Do you have any suggestions to improve the overall effectiveness of the frame?

 Tone  Avoids absolute statements  Does not preach or attempt to persuade  Neutral word choice  Focus on research  Does not feel personal (outside of frame)  Objective  Note areas of concerns, make suggestions for word choice

 Transitional Words and Phrases  All body paragraphs begin with transitional phrases  Transitions help indicate if body paragraphs are claims or counterclaims  The structure of the paragraphs is made clear by the transitions  Points and counterpoints are made clear by the transitions However, some say, alternately, in opposition  Note any areas of confusion and offer suggestions to clarify

 EPL  Highlight and label all examples of EPL  Are they appropriate?  Used effectively?  Where could they build ethos and add logos?  Is there too much pathos?

 Does every body paragraph have at least one quote?  Is the quote attached to the author’s words or dropped?  Does the signal phrase introduce the speaker and the context?  Is there subject/verb agreement?  Does the quote actually support the topic sentence?

 Size 12  Times New Roman  Double Space  Centered Title (No underline, no bold)  No extra space  Header (right aligned, last name, page number)
