Sarcasm A Communication tool Ya, THIS’ll be fun…

2 What is sarcasm? Sarcasm is a type of non-literal language
Sarcasm helps communicate an idea that is different than the words you say Sarcasm involves voice tone, facial expression, and recognizing the context of the conversation

3 Tone Recognizing sarcasm
Changing our voice tone can help show which part of the sentence is sarcasm Example: “Your Uncle Mike is going to be a greeeat doctor.” Using a distinct tone can make the whole idea sarcastic Example: “Greeeeeeat.”

4 Facial Expression Recognizing sarcasm Neutral face Negative/angry face
Wide eyes/eyebrows up during part of the sentence

5 Context and Contradictions
Recognizing sarcasm Context and Contradictions Sometimes we point out something funny or wrong with sarcasm Sarcastic statements often go against common logic or are paired with a contradictory statement Example: It’s really hot outside, but your friend says “Wow, winter already?” Example: “Children are so great, especially when they puke on your shoes.”

6 Famous sarcasm meme! Analyze this meme for the traits of sarcasm

8 Responding to Sarcasm Sometimes, it can be confusing to figure out exactly how to respond when someone uses sarcasm. Try these responses: Fight sarcasm with sarcasm- use sarcasm back! Pick up on their joke and continue it! Say “Right?” or another affirming statement. This shows that you understood their sarcasm. Then, you can transition back to literal speaking.

9 Practicing sarcasm With a partner, practice sarcasm by saying these phrases sincerely and then sarcastically. Your partner should identify which one was sarcasm. Then, switch. “That violin concert was really amazing, wasn’t it?” “I just love your outfit today. Is that a new shirt?” “I can’t wait for my workout today at the gym!” “I love my new diet plan.” (Your mom just said you were going to be spending 12 hours at the museum of toenail polish) “Yay!” “I just love Mondays, especially after I stayed up all night playing my Xbox.” (The lunch lady just asked if you want a fresh, cold chocolate milk) “No, I want a hot, moldy chocolate milk.”

10 Sarcasm Discussion When should you use sarcasm? When should you not use sarcasm? If someone uses sarcasm and you don’t understand what they mean, what should you do? What are your personal feelings about sarcasm? Should teachers use sarcasm with their students?

11 Extended practice For the following images, a volunteer should say the statement using a sarcastic tone and body language Then, come up with your own sarcastic phrases!
