The name means Holy Wisdom. Rebuilt by Emperor Justinian I ( ). In 1453, the Ottomans made Hagia Sophia a mosque and is now a museum. -The church was the most important church of the Christian East.

Trace their roots back to the Apostles and Jesus Christ. Apostolic succession established the seats of Patriarchy. Orthodoxy reached its golden age during the high point of the Byzantine Empire. It continued to flourish in Russia after the Fall of Constantinople

14 The Great Schism The Christian church split into the Eastern (Greek) Orthodox and the Western (Latin) Roman Catholic churches. Reunification attempts have failed over the centuries even though the relationship between the two churches has been strong since 1965.
