1 Note Cards vs. Source Cards

2 Source Cards – You make a source card for the primary and secondary sources you look at for information. Use MLA for the format on the card. You need to collect information about the source such as author, title of article or book, URL, publisher, etc. In the upper left hand corner put a letter for the source, if it’s the first source, put an A. In the upper right hand corner, put the page number you found the information on…if you have one.

3 Notetaking-ask some questions…
What information does this source give me? Does this source help me answer my question(s)?

4 Process for making note cards
Use 3x5 index cards Create a “Source Card” first For notes, put only ONE main point per card Only include information directly related to your topic Only include essential words & abbreviate when possible (doesn’t have to be complete sentences If you quote directly, use quotation marks.

5 Note Cards:

6 Note Cards: another example…

7 Note Cards (cont…) Be accurate: double check facts & quotes
Identify quotes & paraphrases Bracket [] words added to quotes Use ellipsis ([…]) when words are excluded from a quote Distinguish between fact and opinion Include source information on each cardin upper left corner.

8 Speech Assignment: Each student has been given $100 (Best Bucks) to make the world a better place. And, each student must write a speech to persuade other students to give their money to a charity or cause of their choosing. After hearing all of the speeches, you will decide who to award your money to (can’t give it to yourself). Out of my 3 classes, I will give the person with the most money $20 (check made out to the charity) to send to his/her charity. Essay/speech should include: Introduction including a Central Claim 2 sub claim paragraphs 2 counterclaim and rebuttal in 1 paragraph Conclusion that has a call to action 2 Pathos 2 Ethos 2 Logos Use at least 3 sources- 1 has to be an interview where you talk directly to someone (websites, personal interviews with people affected, phone call with organization, pamphlet) **When writing questions for an interview, you must write 3 beforehand and get them checked by the teacher before the interview. 15 notecards – 1 fact on each

9 Practice source card and notecard activity
Using the 2 sources in front of you, make a source card for each and then take 2 notes from each source…be sure to label source cards and notecards.
