1 Stages of Prejudice Stage #1 Antilocution Means ‘speaking against’
Taken from psychologist Gordon Allport, in his book The Nature of Prejudice Stage #1 Antilocution Means ‘speaking against’ Words like nigger, wetback, etc– which are deliberate Sometimes negative speech occurs almost unconsciously “Indian-giver” “I got gyped” “That’s so gay.” Using the word “jew” in reference to money What words and phrases do we use to put others down? Antilocution hurts both the person demeaned, and the “out” group utilized to demean the person.

2 Who do you make a point of avoiding? Why?
Stage #2 Avoidance Prejudiced persons can and do go to great lengths to avoid and stay away from persons they dislike. Not sitting next to someone on a bus, at lunch, in a class Crossing the street to avoid someone Hurrying away from someone who they think hasn’t noticed them at a party, store, etc. Those who are avoided feel dehumanized Ironically, the prejudiced person may inconvenience him/herself with this behavior Once this stage is reached, it often leads to worse stages of prejudice. Who do you make a point of avoiding? Why?

3 Stage #3 Discrimination Harmful actions against disliked persons
Discrimination denies people their fundamental human rights, at the very least it does not treat them like equals Examples: Denying people jobs OR wages OR benefits due to race, sex, religion, weight, age, etc. Excluding people from neighborhoods Restricting people’s educational opportunities Excluding people from joining social groups Segregation both in law/ policy and behind-the-scenes Propaganda

4 Stage #4 Physical Attack
Physically harmful actions against the ‘undesirable’ Heightened emotions many times lead to this stage In US Law, this is referred to a hate crime Examples: Desecrating graveyards Spitting on people Throwing stones or other objects (even “soft” ones like food) Forcible ejection from place/ neighborhood Gang violence Gay bashing No one should have to refrain from going certain places in order to avoid these actions. Everyone has the right to be free from these behaviors, and society has the duty to protect everyone from these.

5 Stage #5 Extermination It is the killing or murder of the ‘undesirable,’ either an individual or an entire group of people. The ultimate and worst form of discrimination Examples: Assassinations- can you name an example? Lynchings Bombings Ethnic/ Religious cleansings Historians have termed the 20th Century as the most violent in human history. They are speaking in terms of quantity of events- Nazi Germany, Turkey’s genocide against Armenia, Mao’s ethnic cleansing of China, African tribal cleansings, the European settlers to the Americas, etc.
