2 MOTHER’S MOTHER SIDE The story of my family on my mother’s mother side and father side. I am a descendant of an African slave, that was brought over from Africa during the 1619’s. During my research I’ve located documents showing my est. 6G and paternal 5G-Grandparents are from Africa; which is my great-grandmother’s great-great grandparents and great-grandparents. After talking with a few relatives, I found out that not only are we African- Americans, but we are mulattos as well. My 2g-grandmother’s father was white. I have newspaper articles, documents, events and few pictures attached to this timeline as evident to show my family on my mother’s side. 14

3 MOTHER’S FATHER SIDE A small timeline about my mother’s father. According to the1920 United States Federal Census, my grandfather T.L. Johnson, was seven years old. He was born and raised in Texas about 1913…with his mother Gladys Johnson, two brothers Hendon and Fredie-no sisters. That same year the US. Post service started parcel delivery and Rosa Parks (born Roas Louise McCauley) was born on 4th day of February. . According to Ancestry.com my grandparents were a young married couple with two children living in Texas. After moving to California, I remembered grandfather owning a Texaco gas station on Western avenue in Los Angeles. In the1937 my mother was four and that same year Joe Louis defeated James J. Braddock to become heavyweight boxing champion of the world. 15

4 HISTORICAL EVENTS Attached are different artifacts that depict my 6g and 5g-grandparents; as known slaves. I believe my relatives were auctioned off to other plantations. At the hospital his original name was John Doe; however, officer Heaton gave my dad his last name instead. So, from that dreadful day of July 1933, my dad’s name was John Heaton. He never knew his real parents, nor any of his biological relatives. Apparently, my biological grandmother didn’t know about him as well because I believe she would have taken care of him as baby. During that era abandon children were either in orphanage or foster care. Victoria Jackson, a foster care person kept my dad in her home until the state came and place him with someone else. Mrs. Jackson, wanted to adopt my dad, but back than the laws were strong and against alcoholic near any children. My dad transferred to a location on the Westside of Los Angeles, were he lived until he went the Air force…where he deployed to Kadena Air force base in Okinawa, Japan. Later in his years, my dad became a boxer where he practiced at the Hoover Street gym. 17

Victorians created traditions that are unique and not currently practiced. Identify 3 concepts about Victorian life that you did not know before you went on the class tour. Identify 3 mechanical gadgets that impressed you during the tour. 3 concepts about Victorian life: During the summers the large doors stayed opened to allow the ocean breeze …in the house. During the winter they would close the big doors and opened the small doors to let the heat from the fireplace to warm this huge house. In the Banning house the love of pictures displayed in every room of the house, including hair framed pictures. In the dining room a picture of a deceased child, hung on the wall with close head shot of his nephew that drown, and the body of another child. Whereas, most modern homes come with a walk-in closet, the Banning house used armoire because having a closet would mean they would pay taxes…back than a closet was considered a room. 3 mechanical gadgets: The printing press Mr. Banning housed in his private studies. The mechanical butter dish with an ice tray to keep the butter from melting, in the dining room sitting on the dinner buffet. The butter churning gadget we used in the barn to make fresh homemade butter.
