1 What are these? What do you notice about them that stands out?
Question of the Day 1 What are these? What do you notice about them that stands out?

2 3.) Do you believe humans should live forever?
Questions of the Day 2! 1.) Can something that relies on other organisms to survive be considered living? 2.) In your opinion should an organism have ALL 7 characteristics to be considered living? 3.) Do you believe humans should live forever?

3 Quick Review of Yesterday
Metabolism- The use of energy for cellular processes. Made of Cell (s)- All living things are single celled (bacteria for example) or are made of many cells. Respiration- The consumption or creation of food (energy). Growth and Development- (Self explanatory)

4 More Review  Heredity- The passing on of traits from parents to offspring. Reproduction- The creation of offspring. Response to Stimuli- Examples: Run when you see a bear, laugh at a joke, thirsty when dehydrated, tired when running, deer running when it hears a loud noise, white blood cells attacking a bacteria it bumps into.

5 Viruses Living or Not ???????

6 What do you think scientists believe?

7 Characteristics of Viruses
Among the smallest biological particles that are capable of causing diseases in living organisms

8 The Debate Rages on.. A virus is not a bacteria, fungus, protist, plant or animal. They can not carry out cellular functions. A virus can not replicate without infecting cells and then using the organelles and enzymes of the cells of the host.

9 A Virus Has Two Essential Features
A Nucleic Acid DNA (Herpes, HPV, Small box, Hepatitis B) RNA (Measles, Flu, Rabies, HIV) But not both!!!! A Capsid – a protein coat surrounding the nucleic acid.

10 Viral Replication Adsorption: the binding of particles to a surface.
