1 Objective: SWBAT identify the development of written laws in Rome
Objective: SWBAT identify the development of written laws in Rome. Set Sail: 1) What were the social classes in Ancient Rome? 2) How did each social class participate in the government of the Roman Republic?

2 New Laws Just like Rome, we will divide our class into Plebeians and Patricians. There are some new laws for the classroom, but only the Patricians know them. The Patricians should read the new laws carefully, and raise their hand every time a Plebeian breaks a law. The penalty for breaking the law will be 10 jumping jacks.

3 Fair Law Uniting the Empire
Romans wanted fair law to unite the large Roman Empire and make it strong.

4 Basis of European and US Law
Many legal systems in Europe and the United States were based on Roman law.

5 Lawyers Roman law became more complex. The job of lawyers, called Juris Prudentes, was created to explain the laws.

6 What do you think of our new law system?
The Plebeians in Rome didn’t like it either… What should be done to fix it?

7 Law of the Twelve Tables
Romans created a law code called "Laws of the Twelve Tables.”

8 Twelve Tables The Laws of the Twelve Tables were recorded on metal tablets and posted in the forum, the center of town. The Twelve Tables were placed in the forum so ordinary people could read it easily.

9 Let’s Try… Now I will post to new rules of the classroom on the board. Plebeians, how does that change your lives?

10 Law of Four Bullet Points
All students are forbidden from saying “uh”, “huh?”, or “um”. All students must have their social studies binders on their desks at all times. All students must keep their legs under their desks and their backs on their chairs at all times. Students may not call out without being recognized by the teacher.

11 A Law Code of Our Own? The Romans created the Laws of Twelve Tables to unify Rome and make it stronger. Can you think of any laws that we could add for our school to make it stronger as it grows? Write it on a post-it, and I will post it where all can see it.

12 Check for Understanding
How did having one set of laws affect the Roman Empire? Which modern countries have modeled their law codes after the Roman model? Why was the profession of lawyers begin? What was the Roman law code called? Where were the Twelve posted? Why did the Roman government post the Twelve Tables in the forum? What was the impact of the Twelve Tables on the Roman Empire?
