CIH is celebrating its centenary and as part of that both looking back on its history, for example to founder of predecessor organisation – Octavia Hill, as well as forward to its next 100 years. Octavia Hill - CIH

Women & Housing Sector has come a long way in the last 100 years. Women have been at the forefront of improving social housing for the lives of many. However, there are still huge challenges ahead – we can see this from the campaigns around homelessness linked to the 50th anniversary of Cathy Come Home this year and from the moving film by Ken Loach – ‘I, Daniel Blake’.

Frontline Futures So it is important to reflect on housing’s history, but we must also look to the future, which is what we did in our CIH report Frontline Futures Report still available online and I think CIH in Wales are running courses based on the work.

Challenges & Skills Early draft of infographic in CIH frontline futures. Key among the findings of that report was the need to balance a business head with a social heart – this is what Octavia Hill did. The social heart is vital to the raison d’etre of the social housing sector and it is needed now more than ever – we mustn’t forget that.

What’s coming up? Dr Tim Brown, fabulous former Director of CCHR and continued associate at DMU – looking to the future and learning from the past plus Q&A. Dr Yoric Irving-Clarke, recent DMU PhD graduate and now in policy at CIH – housing as a career & emerging issues for the sector. Peter Cowley, NCHA Assistant Director – tackling worklessness and improving decent homes Natalie Robertson, Chair of CIH East Midlands board – celebrating leading women’s contribution to the sector. Lunch and networking from noon. Thank you to Mohammed Kadri from Waterloo housing who has been the key person on the CIH EM board organising this event. Whilst I’m delighted to welcome you here to DMU, it is Mohammed who has been in charge of organising the agenda and speakers and so thank you to him.
