1 CGA 3 Reflection and Plant Structure
As you come in, all that you have to do in check that your notebook is completed up to page 9. This includes your tracker, table of contents, and the work for each page. ARE YOU MISSING ANYTHING?

2 Essential Question How does the structure of plants (anatomy) allow for the functions which the organism requires for life?

3 How will we get there? Data Chat Page 10:Mini Lab Page 11: Notes

Did you try your best on the CGA3?

6 Today’s Objective SWBAT: describe the structure of major plant organs and tissues and their functions (roots stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, stomata, guard cell)

7 Explore – Lab Specimens PAGE 10
We will be exploring familiar plant organs by making predictions about their functions based on their structures. In the lab you will identify the structure that you see at the lab station and you will predict the function. You should be able to visit all 7 lab stations and make your predictions in 21 minutes.

8 Plant Structure Notes PAGE 11
Plants are made of tissues and organs, just like us! Tissues are a group of cells that have a similar structure and function. Recall how plant cells are different from animal cells. Organs are a group of tissues that have similar structure and function What organs do you have?

9 Plant Tissues Meristematic Ground Dermal/ Epidermal Vascular
Undifferentiated Cells/ Stem Cell (rapidly divide) Ground Leaves, Young Roots, Stems (Inside of the plant) support for the plant Dermal/ Epidermal Single layer outer covering (like the “plant’s skin”) Vascular Complex hollow tubes that transport water, nutrients Think of how blood travels through your body!

10 Plant Organs Roots- Support the plant and absorb, transport and store nutrients. Stems- Support plant, house vascular system and store food or water Leaves- Gather light, retain water, exchange gases Flowers- Reproductive Structure (think pollen) Fruits- Fertilized female ovary of a flower Cones- Reproductive Structure (pollen/sperm production)

11 Plant Structures Xylem- Vascular tissue that carries water
Phloem- Vascular tissue that carries nutrients (sugar) Cambium- Vascular tissue, produces xylem and phloem cells Seed- Structure which stores and protects the plants embryo (think reproduction!)

12 Plant Structures con.. Stomata- Small opening located on the leaf:
Allows CO2 into the plant Allows oxygen out of the plant Guard cell- Controls the size of the opening of the stomata.

13 Plant Processes Transpiration Reproduction
Evaporation of water through leaf stomata. Major force moving water through plants. Think about perspiration (sweat)!!!! Reproduction Seeds: Egg (female) Pollen: Sperm (male) Put ‘em together and you get a baby plant!!!

14 Notes Revisit List all of todays vocabulary onto the back of the mini lab in the space provided. Follow the directions at the top of the handout.

15 Diagramming on Page 10: Stomata Guard Cell Roots Stems Leaves Flowers Fruits Cones Which of these structures plays a major role in the water cycle? WHY?
