4
ROLE OF GOVERNMENT IN CONSERVATISM
Stressed on aristocratic governments, or governments powered by aristocrats allied with wealthy members of the middle class Governments should repress any rapid social change Stick to traditional models of government with a powerful upper class
5
ROLE OF THE INDIVIDUAL IN CONSERVATISM
Not to be overly “presumptuous”– a state that results from progressive attitudes of the human mind Sticking to the social class you were born with Have all changes be organic rather than revolutionary Preservation of personal wealth and private ownership (capitalism)
6
ROLE OF RELIGION IN CONSERVATISM
Churches, being considered part of the European upper class, allied heavily with values of conservatism Traditionalism linked with abiding to God’s moral values Believed that liberalists and nationalists were abandoning religious values
7
COMPARISON TO PAST IDEOLOGIES
Conflicts with the ideas espoused in the Enlightenment, Scientific Revolution, and the French Revolution– specifically those that state that rapid social progress is positive and so is overthrowing unfair governments Though conservatism was a reaction to the French Revolution, its ideas align with the ideas of Richard Hooker, a 16th century Anglican theologian
8
EXAMPLES OF CONSERVATISM
Social/cultural conservatism (preservation of cultural norms; norms based in “moral” values, like covering up women’s faces) Fiscal conservatism (prudence in government spending, i.e. government does not have the right to impose burden on taxpayer for large debts)
