Basic Beats = Crotchet (Quarter note) = 1 beat
= Minim (Half note) = 2 beats = Dotted Minim (Dotted half note) = 3 beats = Semibreve (Whole note) = 4 beats

Time Signatures There are lots of different time signatures
For now we will use 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 2/4= 2 crotchet beats in every bar 3/4= 3 crotchet beats in every bar 4/4= 4 crotchet beats in every bar

Bars A bar is a section of music.
Each bar has to have a certain amount of beats Example: In 4/4 time each bar has to have 4 beats

Is the music loud or soft?
Dynamics Is the music loud or soft? Pianissimo = Very soft (pp) Piano = Soft (p) Mezzo piano= Moderately soft (mp) Mezzo forte= Moderately loud (mf) Forte = Loud (f) Fortissimo= Very loud (ff) Crescendo (getting louder) Decrescendo (getting softer)

Tempo Is the music fast or slow?
Vivace = Fast and lively Lento = Slow Presto = Very fast Largo = Slow and broad Allegretto= Very fast Adagio = Slow and at ease Accelerando = To gradually get faster Andante = At a walking pace Ritardando= To gradually get slower Moderato = Moderately A tempo= Return to original speed Allegro = Fast
