1 Recording and monitoring uptake of JE vaccine
CD-JEV Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine Introduction Training Modules for Health Care Workers Module 5 Recording and monitoring uptake of JE vaccine

2 Learning objectives At the end of the module, the participant will be able to: Monitor use of Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine, CD-JEV. Record vaccination on the child’s immunization card. Record and register immunization in the tally sheet and monthly report. Monitor uptake of CD-JEV. Identify eligible infants and inform parents/caregivers about JE vaccination. Duration: 15 minutes

3 Key issues 1 2 3 4 5 How do I record immunization on the card?
How do I record and register immunization in the tally sheet and monthly report? 2 How do I use the monitoring chart to monitor uptake of CD-JEV? 3 How do I follow up with eligible infants? 4 To the facilitator: Explain to the participants the key issues raised in this module. How do you record and monitor uptake of JE vaccine? We will provide you with answers to the following questions: How do I record immunization on the card? How do I record and register immunization in the tally sheet and monthly report? How do I use the monitoring chart to monitor uptake of CD-JEV? How do I follow up with eligible infants? How do I identify eligible infants and inform caregivers about JE vaccination? How do I identify eligible infants and inform caregivers about JE vaccination? 5

4 How to monitor use of CD-JEV (1/2)
Immunization cards, tally sheets, stock forms and monthly reporting forms are being updated to include JE vaccine. Record JE vaccine doses given on the child’s immunization card and the health center or clinic recording register. Q: What if the parents of the child provide an old immunization card without JE vaccine printed on the card? A: Health workers may either add the JE vaccination data by hand to the old card or replace the card with a new one, transferring over ALL data from the old card. To the facilitator: Explain to the participants how to monitor the use of JE vaccine: Immunization cards, tally sheets, stock forms and monthly reporting forms are being updated to include JE vaccine. 5 How to use the immunization card
To the facilitator: Explain to the participants how to use the immunization card. Parents should keep the immunization card in a safe place at home. Then they need to remember to bring the immunization card back to the health center for each visit. The health worker must check the card to determine eligibility and fill it out after the child’s vaccination, providing details of vaccines given and the date for the next visit. Then, the parents should take the immunization card back home and keep in a safe place.

6 How to monitor use of CD-JEV (2/2)
Keep a record of doses used during the immunization session and then enter the total doses used on the routine reporting form at the end of the session. It is important to monitor the use of vaccine and to think about ways to reduce wastage. Check used vaccine vials to ensure reconstitution is done well so that the full number of doses are used (for 5-dose vials) each time. Recording and reporting should also include completion of vaccine stock management forms to ensure sufficient supplies are available at the vaccination sites. 7 How to record CD-JEV on the
monthly report Report CD-JEV doses given each month, along with other vaccine doses. Use tally sheets to prepare monthly reports to send to supervisors. If you have old reporting forms, add lines to report JE vaccine doses given. To the facilitator: Explain to the participants how to record JE vaccine on the monthly report. 7

8 How to identify eligible infants and inform parents/caregivers about JE vaccination
Inform parents of the importance of protecting their child against JE. Explain that JE vaccination is recommended for children months of age and older for maximum protection against severe JE. If too young to be eligible at the visit, remind parents when the child should return for JE vaccination. If possible, follow up with the parents of children who are due for vaccination but have not yet come to the health center. To the facilitator: Explain to the participants how to identify eligible infants and inform parents/caregivers about JE vaccination. If CD-JEV is administered to children older than 8 months, such as 9 months or 1 year, bullet 2 can be modified to specify age targeted for vaccination. 8

9 How to monitor uptake of CD-JEV
Use a monitoring chart to track the number of children who received CD-JEV. To the facilitator: Explain to the participants how to monitor the uptake of CD-JEV. 9

10 Key messages Fill in the immunization card once the JE vaccine has been administered to the child; if the parent has brought an old immunization card, either write in the JE vaccination data by hand on the old card, or transfer ALL immunization data for the child onto a new card. The tally sheet, vaccine stock management form and monthly report forms should all be updated to include JE vaccine. Explain to parents the importance of JE vaccination and remind them that vaccination is recommended at 8 months of age, if their child is not yet eligible. Track monthly targets for JE vaccination closely; be sure to follow up regularly with parents of eligible children. To the facilitator: Explain to the participants that this is the main information to keep in mind. 10

11 End of module Next is Module 6: CD-JEV AEFI monitoring
Thank you for your attention! Next is Module 6: CD-JEV AEFI monitoring To the facilitator: This is the end of the module. You have been introduced to “Recording and monitoring uptake of JE vaccine” module. The following module is titled “CD-JEV AEFI monitoring”. Thank you for your attention!
