3 How do historians learn about the past?
History textbooks are not written by themselves. They utilize the work of historians, archaeologists and anthropologists that observe, analyze and interpret primary artifacts.

4 Primary Sources Secondary Sources
Documents that come from/are written in the time period studied. Letters, newspapers, journals, artifacts such as tools, pottery, etc. Secondary Sources Documents that were created after the time period studied. Textbooks, most paintings, movies, television programs, most research books.

5 How do historians study primary sources?
Historians ask many questions to determine as much information as possible. They also use any previous research on that subject to help.

6 Activity The next slide has an important artifact.
Look at the slide carefully. In your group, create a list of ten questions to ask about this artifact.
