They utilize the work of historians, archaeologists and anthropologists that observe, analyze and interpret primary artifacts.

Documents that come from/are written in the time period studied.
Letters, newspapers, journals, artifacts such as tools, pottery, etc.
Secondary Sources
Documents that were created after the time period studied.
Textbooks, most paintings, movies, television programs, most research books.

They also use any previous research on that subject to help.
